Anant Pai was born in 1929 in Karkala, in the present Udupi district of Karnataka. He was born in a Konkan speaking Brahmin family. Orphaned at an early age, he lived with his maternal his grandfather for a few years and then moved to Bombay (Mumbai). He graduated from the University of Bombay Department of Chemical Technology. He was influenced by the lack of knowledge among the youth of the cultural and literary treasures of India, to start a series of books that would retell stories from ancient Indian works.
