The study of Mathematics should include more than its definitions, axioms, theorems, formulae and abstract examples. Students need to appreciate the history of mathematics, how it evolved in various countries over the centuries, and value the role of mathematics in development of modern society. Students need to know the ‘what’ and ‘why’ of things. Being alert to “maths in today’s newspaper” could be a good starting point-be it increasing crime rate chart, stock market quotes, votes percentage of various parties, the temperature/humidity charts, or gold prices, and so on. Teachers should try to enliven the subject by examples from real life and encourage students to think how the mathematical knowledge learnt during the period could be applied to day-to-day activities, or to other subjects.
