S M Yahya was born in 1938 in Jaipur. He received his early education in Jaipur and did his engineering from AMU Aligarh. Then he obtained his doctoral degree in Turbomachinery from the University of Liverpool, England in 1965. He had been serving the Indian Institute of Technology Delhi since 1967.
