The March sisters in Little Women are separate people, each with her own way of thinking. This was perhaps unusual at the time, more than a hundred years ago. In most middle-class families the girls had to be good and obey their parents, not to show independent character. Needlework and reading were all right, but you did not find a young lady brushing a path through the snow, or throwing snow at a boy's window.
